We’re happy to offer this free lookup to help you find your Civil War soldier in the index—but we do need a little help from you too. If you know the regiment number (like “7th Iowa Infantry” or “15th Indiana Cavalry”), please include it.

That one detail makes a big difference. It helps us get results faster and—more importantly for you—more accurately. Without it, we’re often stuck guessing between multiple soldiers with the same name, which means there’s a good chance we may pull the wrong one.

We want to keep this service free and helpful for everyone. But when people leave out key info they do have, it slows things down and, honestly, makes us feel a little overwhelmed with the difficulty of looking up the requests that we get.
